Monster picture books

We have found a whole load of picture books to enjoy during our ‘Monsters & Wild Things’ topic.

Yesterday, we read There’s a Yeti in my shed by Daniel Postgate. Afterwards, we had a Drama lesson in the hall where we imagined what it would be like to find a friendly monster hiding somewhere in our house. We had lots of ideas which we then able to use in our story writing. Here are some examples of our work-

‘When I got into my bed I had a fright. A hairy Yeti!’ Ben

‘I saw a monster! I was shocked. He was hairy and scary. It was like a giant!’ Yusuf

‘I found a Yeti in my washing machine!’ Cholan

We have also been enjoying Love Monster by award winning author and illustrator Rachel Bright. You can find out more about this book, as well as lots of other picture books, on the Booktrust website.http://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/books/31994

We might even have a go at drawing our own Love monsters!

Some of the books we have been enjoying in Year 1

We are readers

In our weekly ‘Lovell Land’ sessions, boys are able to come into the Library with their friends from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. We read our favourite books to one another, draw illustrations for books and learn more about our favourite authors. After we have read a book, we love to give it a star rating out of 5 and to recommend it to others. Here we are with just a small selection of the books we have read this term.

We love coming to the library. It is a time for us to choose whatever book we would like to explore and not have to worry about whether the words are ‘easy’ or ‘hard’. Sometimes we pick books just because we like the illustrations, or the look of the cover, so much!

World Book Day

Yesterday was World Book Day. At Lovell House we were visited by local author, Jonathan Emmett. He read some of his super stories about pigs to Year 1. We loved hearing about a piglet and a princess who changed places! ‘The Pig’s Knickers’ was also one of our favourites.
We asked Mr Emmett lots of questions about his life as an author. Some of the questions we asked are below-

“How did you become an author?”- Jagpal

“What is your favourite character from a story?”- Harrison

“What is your favourite book to read?”- Naveen

We learnt that Mr Emmett loved the book ‘Where the Wild Things are’ and that he liked to take animal characters and make them more human.
It was a brilliant day, and Mr Emmett even signed some books for our school!
